GoodWe 6kW Hybrid Inverter vs. Used Solar Kit: A Procurement Lesson
I'm the office administrator for a 60-person manufacturing company. I manage all the purchasing—roughly $180,000 a year across 20 vendors, from safety gloves to the new solar system. I report to both operations and finance, so I'm the one stuck in the middle when something doesn't ship on time.
In early 2024, the operations manager asked me to get quotes for a solar setup for the north warehouse. After a week of calls, I had two realistic options:

- Long-term support and paperwork
Here's how each one played out.
Dimension 1: Upfront cost
Let's get the obvious one out of the way. The used solar kit was cheaper. The listing was $4,200—or rather, $4,400 with the seller's "express pallet" fee, but I'd have to check the exact screenshot. It included 24 panels, a charge controller, four 12V batteries of unknown age, and all the mounting rails. No inverter. No communication module. No smart meter.
The new GoodWe system was more. Now this is where the comparison got interesting.
Our utility rebate had a strict deadline. The inspection had to happen before March 31, or we'd lose a $3,500 rebate. That date was not flexible. When I asked the used-kit seller for a delivery estimate, he said "probably next week." When I asked about installation support, he said he "could maybe" send someone, but he was busy.
The GoodWe distributor gave me a confirmed delivery date in three days and a one-week installation window. That certainty cost money—the system was maybe $2,000 more—but the rebate alone covered most of that difference.
Here's the thing I've learned the hard way: in an emergency, you're not paying extra for the product. You're paying extra for certainty. In March 2024, I paid $400 for rush delivery of a custom part because the alternative would have made us miss a $15,000 client event. Same logic applies here.
An uncertain cheap option is more expensive than a certain expensive one.
On lead time and certainty, the new GoodWe system won. It wasn't even close.
Dimension 3: Installation and compatibility
It's tempting to think a 6 kW inverter is a 6 kW inverter, so used parts are just as good as new. But that advice ignores one thing: integration.
With the used kit, I would have had to match an unknown inverter to unknown batteries, wire a charge controller, and somehow make it talk to our monitoring app. Actually, there was no monitoring app—the seller said I could "probably figure out" the Bluetooth module. For an off-grid battery storage setup, you can mix and match components if you know what you're doing. But if you don't, you become your own technical support.

One small example: after installation, I couldn't find the energy readings in the app. The installer's first question was, "Where is my smart meter?"—meaning, in the app's meter list. I'm not saying a single-brand system is automatically better. There are plenty of good inverters out there. But when procurement is the buyer, you have to think about the installation process and who to call when something isn't working. The used kit had no one.

Dimension 4: Long-term support and paperwork
This might be the one that saved us.
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I learned the hard way that the cheapest quote isn't always the cheapest invoice. A vendor couldn't provide a proper invoice—handwritten receipt only—and finance rejected the expense report. That cost us $2,400 out of the department budget. Now I verify paperwork before I order.
The used solar kit had no warranty paperwork, no certification documents, and no support line. The seller offered a "verbal guarantee" that made me nervous. There's also the safety side. According to IEC 62109, a safety standard for PV inverter equipment, inverters for grid connection should be certified to relevant electrical safety requirements. In North America, grid-tied inverters are typically listed to UL 1741. The used kit came with no listing documents. I'm not saying it was unsafe—I'm saying I couldn't verify it. For a commercial building, that's a problem.
On support, compliance, and paperwork, the new system wins. Easily.
So which one should you choose?
If your situation is completely different—if you're a solar installer with a parts room full of spare components, or if you're building a weekend off-grid battery storage setup for a cabin with no deadline—a used solar kit can make sense. I've seen good DIY builds. I've also seen people who know exactly what they're doing save a lot of money with used equipment. "Always buy new" is not the point.
But for a business with a deadline, a rebate on the line, and no in-house solar expert, the new GoodWe system was the better buy. When I compared the two options side by side—same roof, same power need—I finally understood why the cheap option was cheap. It moved all the risk from the seller to me. The GoodWe inverter price felt high until I added up the cost of uncertainty: the risk of missing the rebate, the time spent troubleshooting, the finance headaches, and the absence of support. That risk had a real price.
Bottom line: if you have the time and the expertise to manage used gear, go for it. If you need assurance that the system will be running by a certain date, pay for certainty. Trust me on this one.
