I run a small solar installation business, and I've been at it since 2017. In that time I've made and documented 14 significant mistakes, totalling roughly £9,000 in wasted budget—so you don't have to repeat them. These seven questions land in my inbox and on site more than any others. The answers below are the ones I learned the hard way, not the ones from a product brochure.
1. How much is one solar panel?
As of January 2025, a decent 400–430W panel from a UK supplier costs about £80–130. Budget panels sit below that, and premium ones (REC, SunPower, that end of the market) climb higher. But the panel itself is only part of the bill. For a fully installed system in early 2025, you're usually looking at roughly £1,000–1,400 per kWp before battery. Panels are one line item, not the whole story.
The question behind it is almost always "what does a full system cost?" And that's where I've watched customers get burned. In 2021 I quoted a customer £5,500 for a complete 4.8kW install. They compared it to a £2,000 online listing for just the panels and went with the cheap option. The panels sat in their garage for months because the quote didn't include an inverter, racking, or anyone to fit them.
I don't have hard data on how often that happens. Anecdotally? From the callouts I get, kind of a lot. Compare whole-system prices, not just the glass.
2. Do I actually need the GoodWe app?
Yes. I used to treat the app as a nice extra, but it's really the control panel for your system. It's where firmware updates land, where the owner sees generation and battery state, and—on the installer side—where you commission a unit through the SEMS portal.
The weak spot is Wi-Fi. In 2022, I had an install where the router was a few rooms away. I thought "we've done this a hundred times, it's fine." It wasn't. The customer couldn't pair the app at all, and I spent an afternoon running ethernet cable through their loft. Now a signal check is step one before the inverter goes on the wall, not an afterthought.
For installers, the GoodWe Pro app and the SEMS portal both have their place—one for the pocket, one for the laptop. Set both up before you leave site.
One safety note: only download the app from official app stores. I've seen third-party pages offering "GoodWe updates" that were anything but official.
3. Do I need a special camper solar inverter?
You won't find a product category called "camper solar inverter" in the spec sheets. What matters is the type: for a camper, you almost always want a hybrid/off-grid inverter—one that works with batteries and takes solar input. Grid-tie units only run when the grid is present, which makes them pretty useless in a field.
I sold a grid-tie inverter to a van builder in 2020 because I assumed "inverter" was the whole answer. Didn't verify how he'd use it. He ripped it out a month later and fitted a £300 all-in-one off-grid unit. I lost the job and a chunk of my reputation over it.
Sizing matters too. Don't stick a 6kW hybrid in a van with a 2.4kWh battery bank—the standby draw will drain the batteries faster than the roof panels fill them. For most camper builds, a 1–2kW hybrid is more than enough. If you also plan to plug into campsite hookups, look for a hybrid with a decent AC charger built in, so the battery charges while you're on shore power.
4. Should I get a home wind turbine in the UK?
Probably not, if you live on a normal street. I know that's not the fun answer.
Wind turbines need sustained wind speed—most installers I know look for a minimum average of around 5 m/s at hub height, and you'd want more in practice. Most UK homes in towns and suburbs don't get close to that at rooftop level, and nearby houses and trees create turbulence that makes the real numbers worse. A 1kW turbine in a poor spot might produce only 100–200 kWh a year. The same budget spent on extra solar panels will typically give you three or four times that, with less maintenance.
The exception is an exposed rural site—open fields, no tall trees within 100m, a reliable onshore breeze. In eight years, I've had exactly one customer where a turbine made sense: an exposed hill farm with high winter demand. If that's not you, spend the money on more panels and battery. I'd rather disappoint you upfront than explain a 12-year payback in person.
Caveat: my experience is mostly UK residential. If you're scoping a community-scale project, my advice doesn't carry over.
5. What GoodWe inverter news is actually worth following?
Sort it into three buckets. First, firmware updates that affect grid compliance—in the UK, that includes things like G99/G100 settings. Those can matter legally and keep older units running correctly. Second, product launches. Since 2023, GoodWe has been expanding the Lynx battery family and rolling out newer hybrid series, which changes what you can spec. Third, app and portal updates that affect how you commission and monitor systems.
Everything else is marketing, and some of it is worse. I don't have hard data on how much fake "news" is out there, but in the past year two customers asked me to install updates from third-party links that had nothing to do with GoodWe. My rule: if it's not on the official GoodWe site, from your distributor, or inside the SEMS app, don't trust it.
The bottom line? Follow official channels only, and treat forum gossip as entertainment.
6. Can I mix a GoodWe inverter with a cheaper battery?
Sometimes, if the battery is on GoodWe's tested compatibility list. But even then, I keep customers inside that list unless they fully understand the risk.
In 2023, I fitted a hybrid inverter with a non-listed "deal" battery to save a customer £500. During the first cold week, the battery dropped offline repeatedly, the system logged communication faults, and the customer started calling the whole setup rubbish. I spent five hours across support tickets while each manufacturer pointed at the other. Eventually I replaced the battery with a Lynx unit at my own cost—just over £1,000 with labour. A £500 saving turned into a £1,000 loss and a customer who nearly didn't recommend me.
Here's what that taught me: the customer didn't blame the battery. They blamed the brand. The inverter was fine, but GoodWe's name took the hit anyway. That's what quality is worth in this industry—not that cheap is always bad, but that an unlucky pairing can drag the whole system down in the customer's eyes.
7. Do I need the full GoodWe ecosystem (battery, EV charger, smart meter)?
No, nothing forces you to buy everything from one brand. But there's a practical argument: single-app control. If the inverter is GoodWe, the app already tracks generation and battery state. Adding a GoodWe EV charger and smart meter puts charging and household consumption in the same view, which makes the system easier for customers to understand and easier for you to support.
I used to mix brands on nearly every project to shave costs. The mixed setups are the ones that created the most support calls—different apps, different accounts, different warranty paths, and more "why does my app show zero?" panic in winter. The ecosystem route means one login, one set of settings, and a lot fewer of those calls.
