GoodWe Residential Grid-Tie Solar Inverters vs. a Solar Generator: A Purchasing Manager's Honest Comparison
I'm the office administrator for a 40-person engineering firm. I manage facilities purchasing—roughly $180,000 a year across 18 vendors—and I report to both operations and finance. When our leadership asked me to look at solar in 2024, I expected a clean product comparison. It wasn't. The portable generator came out closer to $0.90-1.10 per kWh if we used it daily as a primary power source. It's not that the Titan is overpriced; it's that portable batteries are a terrible way to buy electricity at scale. You're paying for portability and convenience, not cheap energy.
That was the dimension that surprised me. I expected grid-tie to win on long-term cost. I didn't expect it to win by that much. But if you're looking for emergency backup only, the cost per kWh matters less than the ability to get power on demand. For daily use, the math points in one direction.

Dimension 3: Installation, permits, and the GoodWe installer password
The Point Zero Energy Titan is unbox-and-go. In most jurisdictions, you don't need a permit to use a portable power station. That's a real advantage if you rent your building or need power in multiple locations. You set up the panels, connect them, and the unit charges.
The GoodWe route is different. You need a design, a permit, and the utility's permission to interconnect. The permitting process took longer than the installation at our office. It involved the building department, the utility, and a licensed electrician. I knew I should have asked our electrician to walk me through the monitoring app before he left the site. Dimension 4: Smart meters and blackouts
Smart meter: what is it? A smart meter is a digital meter that records your electricity usage in intervals (often 15, 30, or 60 minutes) and sends that data back to the utility automatically. It replaces the old analog meter that someone reads once a month. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (eia.gov, accessed January 2025), about 111 million smart meters were installed in the U.S. as of 2022.
Why does a smart meter matter for grid-tie solar? Because net metering depends on it. The meter has to track both what you import and what you export. If your utility doesn't have a smart-meter or net-metering program, the economics of a grid-tie system change. We checked ours through DSIRE (dsireusa.org, as of January 2025) before signing anything. Dodged a bullet, actually: a solar lease rep had told us we were probably fine because the building already had a smart meter. Our utility confirmed the meter could handle net metering, but only after a separate agreement. That's not something I'd assume.
Now, the blackout question. A standard grid-tie inverter is designed to shut off during a utility outage. That's called anti-islanding, and it protects utility workers. If your only goal is to keep the lights on when the grid goes down, a portable solar generator can do that without any transfer switch or permits. The Titan is handy for that. But it won't pay your electric bill. A GoodWe hybrid system with a battery and backup gateway can support essential circuits during an outage—but that's a serious configuration, not a default feature.
Which should you choose?

A smart meter is almost certainly going to be part of the process—and if it isn't, ask why.
If you rent, move between locations, or need portable backup for a job site, the Point Zero Energy Titan solar generator is a simpler tool. It's not a utility asset. It's a portable battery you can recharge with solar. That's a fine thing to buy, as long as you know it won't offset your next 12 utility bills.
And if you need both, buy both—or start with one and add the other. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. GoodWe's strength is fixed grid-tie and hybrid solar equipment. Point Zero Energy's strength is portable power. Neither one is the whole answer for every building. That's okay. The vendors who admit their boundaries are the ones I trust with a contract.
