If you're comparing GoodWe solar inverter installation quotes, the first number you see is often the least useful number on the page. I work on the quality side at GoodWe—the part of the team that reviews specifications and installation documents before they turn into real roof work. What jumps out at me, again and again, is that the difference between two quotes is usually what's missing, not what's better.
So this guide compares the two ways a typical UK home gets quoted for GoodWe equipment. Option A is the “PV-first” quote: solar, a grid-tie inverter, a charger added later, and smart metering left to the energy supplier. Option B is the integrated route: a GoodWe hybrid inverter, a Lynx Home battery, a GoodWe EV charger, and a dedicated energy meter, all designed to work as one system. Same roof, similar installer reputation, surprisingly different long-term cost.
Setting Up the Comparison: Option A vs Option B
These are the two quote structures I keep seeing when proposals land in my review queue.
Option A — “PV-first”: a 4 kWp array, a 5 kW GoodWe grid-tie inverter, a third-party 7 kW EV charger (or none at all), and an assumption that the energy supplier will sort out the smart meter. Battery: “maybe later.”
Option B — “whole-home”: the same 4 kWp array, a 5 kW GoodWe hybrid inverter, one Lynx Home battery module, a GoodWe 7.4 kW EV charger, and a GoodWe energy meter or CT clamp feeding one monitoring system. Battery: now, not later.
We'll compare them across four dimensions: real price, EV charging, smart metering, and what the 5 kW rating actually means in daily use.
Dimension 1: Price vs Future Cost
Here's something vendors won't tell you: a lower quote often just assumes more will happen later, off-quote. On paper, Option A can look dramatically cheaper. On site, it often isn't.
An illustrative pair of quotes from my desk—same property, same 4 kWp array, both from MCS-accredited installers:

The £4,200 gap is real money. But look at what Option B includes that Option A postpones: a battery, a charger that can talk to the inverter, and a meter that lets the system manage energy intelligently. Every time I audit a retrofit later, the sum of “we'll add it later” is higher than the original quote difference—because later means another scaffold visit, another electrician day, another commissioning call, and usually a higher price for the same hardware.
Comparison conclusion: cheaper today is not the same as cheaper overall. Option A is legitimate only if you genuinely won't add battery or smart EV charging in the next few years.
Dimension 2: EV Chargers—GoodWe vs Wallbox for a Solar Garage
If the quote includes an EV charger, this is where the two options really diverge. A “solar garage” setup—charger in the garage, car charging from rooftop surplus—can be done with almost any decent charger. Wallbox is a well-known third-party example, and a good one. But the comparison isn't about brand loyalty. It's about how many separate boxes need to communicate.
A Wallbox-style charger does solar charging by monitoring the property with its own meter or CT clamp. That works fine, and it works with any inverter. If you already own one, keeping it is a completely reasonable choice.
A GoodWe EV charger, by contrast, reads from the same GoodWe meter or CT as the inverter and battery. You get one app, one set of installation connections, and the ability to do things like charge the car from battery surplus or set the battery to avoid peak-rate imports. There's no second meter to install, which simplifies the wiring and reduces the chance of something being configured wrong.
On price, the hardware comparison is closer than most people expect: in quotes I reviewed in January 2025, a GoodWe 7.4 kW charger and a comparable Wallbox unit both fell in the £600–£900 retail range. Installation often costs more than the difference. A dedicated 32 A circuit, plus any earthing work required under BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations), can add several hundred pounds regardless of charger brand.
Comparison conclusion: for a new GoodWe solar-plus-battery install, the integrated charger is the lower-risk choice because it removes an extra meter and an extra app. If you already have a Wallbox or another charger you like, keep it—but make sure the quote includes whatever CT or meter it needs to do solar charging properly.
Dimension 3: Smart Meter Install—Two Meters That Do Different Jobs
What most people don't realize is that a modern solar install can involve two “meters,” and a quote might only include one.
The first is your energy supplier's smart meter. In Great Britain, that's usually installed free by the supplier. Under Ofgem's Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) rules (ofgem.gov.uk), larger suppliers must offer an export tariff, but each sets its own rate and eligibility terms. If you want to be paid for exported solar power, the supplier's meter normally needs to be export-enabled—ask about that specifically, because not every smart meter setup is.
The second is the energy meter or CT clamp that the inverter itself uses. This is not a billing meter. It measures household consumption and generation so the GoodWe system can decide when to charge the battery, when to discharge it, and whether there is genuinely surplus solar for the EV charger. Option B includes this. Option A often assumes it can be added later—which means a second visit and another commissioning step.
So when a quote says “smart meter install included,” ask: which meter, installed by whom, and does it communicate with the inverter? Those are three different questions, and the answers change the final cost.
Comparison conclusion: Option A assumes the free supplier meter is enough. It isn't, once you add a battery or smart EV charging. Option B prices the meter that makes the rest of the system intelligent from day one.
Dimension 4: What Can a 5000-Watt Power Inverter Run?
This is the question I see in almost every spec review, and it's worth answering directly. At 230 V, 5,000 W is roughly 21.7 A. That's enough for most normal daytime household use, but it is not “run the whole house with everything on at once.”
Here are typical running loads to use as a ballpark:
- Kettle: about 2,200 W
- Toaster: about 1,800 W
- Microwave: about 900 W
- Washing machine: about 2,200 W while heating, less while spinning
- Electric oven: around 2,400–3,000 W depending on model
- Fridge/freezer: about 150 W average, with a starting surge
- LED TV, router, lights: roughly 200–300 W combined
Kettle, microwave, fridge, TV and lights add up to about 3,500 W—comfortably within a 5 kW inverter. Add a toaster at the same time as the kettle and you're over 5,000 W, which means something needs to wait. That's the honest answer: a 5,000-watt power inverter can run most appliances, but not all of them simultaneously.
There's also a difference between the two quotes hiding inside the same “5 kW” label. Option A's grid-tie inverter only produces while the grid is up and the sun is shining; when the grid goes down, it disconnects by design. That's anti-islanding, and it's a safety requirement. Option B's hybrid inverter can supply backup power to designated circuits during an outage, up to its rated output. The battery, not the inverter, determines how long those circuits stay powered.
One more spec detail worth checking: starting surge. A fridge compressor or a power tool can draw several times its running wattage for a split second. A 5 kW hybrid can usually handle brief overloads, but the exact amount is in the datasheet—ask for it if your quote includes motor loads.
Comparison conclusion: “5 kW” on two different quotes can mean two different capabilities. If backup power matters, Option B is the only one of the two that provides it.
Which One Should You Accept?
Neither quote is wrong. The mistake is choosing based on total price alone.
Option A makes sense when: you already have a charger you plan to keep, you don't need blackout backup, your budget genuinely can't stretch to a battery, and you understand that future upgrades will cost more than they would today.
Option B makes sense when: you're planning an EV, you want one app for the whole system, you care about backup power, or you're likely to add battery storage within the next few years. In those cases, the extra upfront cost is not a luxury—it's avoiding a second installation.
My Five-Minute Pre-Sign Checklist
Before you accept any GoodWe solar inverter installation quote, run this checklist. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction later.
- Model numbers. Does the quote name exact inverter, battery, charger, and meter models? “5 kW inverter” without a model number is not a complete spec.
- Metering. Who installs the energy meter or CT, when, and is it in the price? Is the supplier smart meter export-enabled?
- EV charger integration. Does the charger read solar surplus directly, or does it need its own CT? Is that included?
- Grid paperwork. Does the installer handle the DNO notification (G98/G99 route) and MCS certification? Ask to see it in the quote.
- Backup capability. If the quote says “5 kW,” which 5 kW do you get? Grid-tie only, or hybrid with battery backup? If backup, which circuits are wired to the essential loads panel?
There's something satisfying about opening a quote and seeing every one of those answers already on the page. That's the feeling you want before you sign—not the relief of a low number, but the confidence that the system will do what the quote promised.
