Vendor A was a well-known brand offering inverter + battery + monitoring as a bundle. Vendor B was a smaller company that only did battery systems—they explicitly said they don't make inverters, but they'd integrate with any brand we chose.
Vendor A's quote was $8,000 lower up front. Almost signed. Then I dug into the specs. Now, I'm not saying generalists are useless. For simple residential backup, they can be fine. But for industrial commercial energy storage with complex load profiles, regulatory hurdles, and multi-year ROI calculations, you need depth over breadth. The vendor who admits "this isn't our strength" is giving you a gift: the chance to avoid a costly mismatch.
But Isn't Coordinating Multiple Vendors a Headache?
I get this pushback every time I share this view. "If I buy everything from one supplier, I have one point of contact. If something goes wrong, they can't blame each other." Fair point. But in practice, I've found that a single vendor's handoff between their own departments isn't always seamless either. And when they do point fingers internally, you're stuck waiting for them to sort it out.
Compare that to a specialist battery vendor who has a pre-approved integration list with several inverter brands. They test those combos. They have joint app notes. When you pick a matched pair from their list, you get compatibility without the finger-pointing. The key is to choose vendors who have deliberately defined their boundaries—not ones who sell everything because they're afraid of losing a sale.
The Vendor Who Said "We Don't Do That" Won My Business
Last year, I needed a 100kW solar battery storage system with peak shaving capability. One well-known solar inverter company (let's call them Company C) offered a 100kW inverter and a 200kWh battery. I asked about their battery's warranty terms for daily cycling in a commercial setting. Their sales rep hesitated, then said, "We mainly focus on residential. It might mean more work upfront—evaluating separate vendors, checking compatibility lists. But it saves you from the hidden costs of a system that's "close enough" but never quite right.
